Forcing a company to do the right thing through a government mandate isn’t going to generate the results, the change in thinking and corporate culture that needs to happen. I know my reaction when someone bigger than me tells me how it’s going to be.
A different approach might be to reward the companies who are already doing it. There are a few out there that would never question/penalize/etc. a parent/caregiver for having to leave work to help a family member in need. Although I am sure they are a very small minority.
How about a tax credit for the “sick” days that companies have to pay as well as some good press…
Part of the reason I was forced to leave my last employer was that because I put my families needs first, I was “perceived” as an an undesirable employee who was not dedicated or committed to company performance, which could not have been further from the truth. But the truth didn’t matter. It was the perception that others built in their minds. That here is a guy going against the established corporate culture. Quick, get him out before he stirs up trouble…..
How do we break this stereotype?

To the comment above: .. having kids teaches many that getting someone to do something through punishment or reward is still getting them to do it.
