More Love for the NYC Dads
Posted on10. Jun, 2010 by Brian Reid.
Check the video:
In the interest of full disclosure, this isn’t a particularly groundbreaking clip. (Seriously, can we retire the practice of showing snippets of ‘Mr. Mom’? It’s gone from being borderline offensive to just plain cliched.) But they do say nice things about Lance (if you’re a NYC at-home dad and don’t know Lance and [...]

Hope for Magazines About Parenting
Posted on07. Jun, 2010 by Brian Reid.
I have, for years, been despondent about the state of the parenting-magazine market, which has — like the majority of the baby-industrial complex — aggressively and intentionally marginalized dads.
This wasn’t the result of some mom cabal, either. There are plenty of guys editing at and writing for these magazines. If you look far back enough, [...]

Babble Retreats; Pays Lip Service to Dads Again
Posted on20. Apr, 2010 by Brian Reid.
Sharp-eyed commenter Chris (of The Daddy Doctrines) noticed that parenting website Babble.com — which quietly changed its tagline from “for a new generation of parents” to “for a new generation of moms” last week — has done an about face, and the language about “parents” has returned.
I would love to shout huzzah!, pump my fist [...]

Urban Baby Doesn’t Get It, Either
Posted on13. Apr, 2010 by Brian Reid.
Thanks to DadWagon, I went back and looked at an extensive Q-and-A the New York Times Cityroom Blog did with Erin Sheehan, community editor of major parenting site/forum urbanbaby.com, back in February. Here is the part that caught my eye:
Q: Where are all the stay-at-home dads in this city? How come we don’t have [...]

Dads Get Driven Out at Babble
Posted on13. Apr, 2010 by Brian Reid.
If you are quick, and you go over to Babble.com *right now* and look at the top of your browser, you’ll see the site’s tagline: “The Magazine and Community for a New Generation of Parents.” If you’re not quick, it might not be there. As you’ll see when you look at the page, Babble.com is [...]

NPR’s Half-Hearted Look at Re-Entering the Workforce
Posted on25. Mar, 2010 by Brian Reid.
Yesterday, NPR took a look at at-home dads, and they started the in the usual, easy, formulaic way: at an at-home dad playgroup (in this case, one of the ones in my old stomping ground). And then the piece pivots to talk about a big and important issue: how dads get back into the workforce [...]

The Latest from Working Mother on Hopeless Fathers
Posted on17. Feb, 2010 by Brian Reid.
A few months back, I dutifully flagged a request from a Working Mother reporter who was putting together a piece on how families were coping with role reversals in cases where the economy flipped breadwinner roles. This is a danger-zone topic for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that it lends [...]

Kids Think the Darnest Things (?!)
Posted on15. Dec, 2006 by Brian Reid.
I’m not sure whether to be angry or confused or depressed over research from the University of Maryland that found that while kids between 7 and 10 years old think that moms are perfectly capable as parents *and* wage-earners, they’re less impressed with a father’s ability to stay home. Waaay less impressed:
Most kids said that [...]

Old Time Rock and Roll Dad
Posted on13. Dec, 2006 by Brian Reid.
I have to be honest: I really hadn’t noticed that Bob Seger had all but disappeared from the rock scene for the last decade. But apparently, the musical genius behind “Old Time Rock and Roll,” had indeed taken some time off to do the at-home dad thing, according to a piece in the Kansas City [...]
