Call for Help from a Reporter
Posted on25. Jul, 2010 by Brian Reid.
This has *not* been a lazy summer, but I wanted to get back on the blogging horse to see if anyone could help with this request:
Dear Brian,
I’m writing an article for Redbook magazine on couples who made the switch from the mother as primary caregiver with husband as breadwinner to the father becoming a Stay [...]

Do We Really Need Dad?
Posted on18. Jun, 2010 by Brian Reid.
In honor of Father’s Day, the Atlantic Monthly has decided to rain on the dad parade with a piece titled “Are Dads Necessary?” (In fairness to the Atlantic, it’s from their July issue, so they’re not actually trying to besmirch dads on Father’s Day. I think.) The Atlantic’s answer, in short: Nope. No dads needed.
The [...]

Moms, Dads, Harmony, Baloney and Babble
Posted on11. Jun, 2010 by Brian Reid.
(I’m about to rant about an article on Babble. As my blood pressure is about to spike and my grammar and logic will go all to hell, please check out the story now, before you get blogged down in my spittle-spewing rage. (Unless you’re boycotting Babble. Which I totally respect.) Do not read the first [...]

The Public Weighs in on Delivery-Room Dads
Posted on11. Jun, 2010 by Brian Reid.
The folks at Jezebel were nice enough to re-publish my piece on dads in the delivery room last night. The discussion has been interesting, with a couple of different camps. First, you have the group that think I’m dead wrong to suggest that this is any sort of imperative:
How about you leave it up to [...]

ParentBlogging Conferences: Now With More Chest Hair
Posted on20. May, 2010 by Brian Reid.
I wrote last month that the world of blogging confabs — where blogger talk to each other, and marketer try to talk to bloggers — was opening up to dads with the launch of the Modern Media Man event in Atlanta this autumn. This was a big deal because though there are bunches of mommyblogger [...]

Dads and Workforce Re-Entry (and New Stats!)
Posted on19. May, 2010 by Brian Reid.
The Wall Street Journal yesterday tackled the thorny issue of dads re-entering the workforce. This is by no means a new topic (the WSJ did essentially the same piece as early as 2003), but I’m always interested in the anecdotes.
According to this week’s piece, by work-family guru Sue Shellenbarger, it really is tough out there [...]

What We Learned from the Pampers Boycott
Posted on14. May, 2010 by Brian Reid.
My mini-obsession with bringing down Pampers this week has taken away from the usual dad-centric programming that you all know and love, so I’m shelving the boycott posts for now (don’t get me wrong: I’m still boycotting. I’m just not going to continually post on it). But I did garner three insights this week that [...]

Happy Mother’s Day, RebelMom!
Posted on09. May, 2010 by Brian Reid.
My eldest daughter is now at the age where I can say, with some confidence, that she is on track to blossom into a strong, thoughtful woman who chafes at injustice and who is committed to changing the world. She is growing into that kind of woman as a direct result of her mother. Both [...]

Forget Avatar: Pre-Order “Evolution of Dad” *Now*
Posted on01. May, 2010 by Brian Reid.
This has been a long time coming, but Dana Glazer’s documentary on modern fatherhood, “Evolution of Dad,” is now available for pre-order (it’ll be shipping on May 18).
Over the nearly 8 years that I’ve been writing this blog, there have been huge advances in the world of at-home dad media. We’ve had an explosion of [...]

Compare and Contrast: NYC Dads and Brazil
Posted on27. Apr, 2010 by Brian Reid.
Last year, a reporter with Brazil’s TPM (think People, only in Portuguese) spent some time hanging with the NYC at-home dad group. I spend a lot of time here bellyaching about the fact that the United States ranks pretty poorly when it comes to laws that support families. But that doesn’t mean that this is [...]
