How funny that they call themselves “open-minded!” I find it sort of refreshing, though, that they’ve at least spelled out their ground rules. Sometimes, it seems, moms’ groups are not officially “ladies’ only” but from time to time I still get some form of the “treatment” (the looks or the cold shoulder).

The largest moms’ group in my area (with 339 moms) was kind enough to put a link to my dads’ group right on their front page. I thought that was nice.
It turns out that dads are not welcome at their playgroups. A couple of dads have reported that they were turned away or snubbed. The moms suggested they look up my dads’ group instead.
I guess I should be happy to get the referrals.

Look, I like to wear lingere and I don’t understand why I can’t…is this thing on? Hello?
OK, guys, I guess we just have to organize our own lingere parties. I’ll post an ad on craigslist and see who answers.

Not allowing fathers to join generic play groups is horrid, yes. Shunning them on the playground-unforgivable. These are situations that are really about the kids.
But I don’t see anything wrong with social groups for women only or for mothers only-just like there is nothing wrong with groups for men only or conventions, say, for at-home dads only. These are groups for the parents.
Until our entire gendered social structure is overthrown and replaced with something gender and sex neutral, motherhood and fatherhood each have their separate social constructs and unique challenges. Don’t groups specific to each parenting construct (mom, dad, or working mom, working dad, lesbian moms) make (some) sense?
