The Six-Figure Job You're Not Being Paid For

Posted on 03. May, 2007 by rebel in General

Salary.com is getting its annual boost from its goofy story on how much moms would get paid if at-home work was valued at market rates. Not much has changed since last year — though upward pressure on wages means a $4,000 “raise” is what moms would be worth.

Despite having a year to fix it, the survey still does the same things wrong as last year. They still assume at-home dads work significantly less than at-home moms, and they assume that the mix of work is different, with dads doing stuff around the house that has a higher value in the marketplace.

Salary.com may have very good reason for twisting the number this way, and if they ever wanted to justify their contention that the work of at-home dads is somehow signficantly different, I’d love to hear it. But as it stands now, it’s just puzzling …

It’s pretty crazy when you do the salary wizard between a mom and dad and see how much less men would make.
It’s also interesting the job descriptions and hours worked between the two.
I don’t get it at all.
    Here’s the wizard address:
    http://swz.salary.com/dadsalarywizard/layoutscripts/dswl_newsearch.asp
When I did it as a dad, I would earn $125,340 (national median) and as a mom I would earn $138,095 (national median). That was done with two children between the ages of 0-5.
So $12,755 difference in pay because I have a penis and the child didn’t come out of it.
    That’s what I gather.

Well I guess the child came out of it in a way, just the lady got the rough end of the deal at birth.
Maybe that’s worth the extra 12 grand and change!?

All these “Salary” stories are just a way for people to confirm to the world they do something. Being at home with the kids is PRICELESS. I would not even try to put a $$$ value to it. Is it a six figure job… NO… If someone offered me 6 figures I would take it. The last I checked the value in the job was the end result and not $$$ compensation. Only after a lifetime will you know how much you made so to speak…
