I have two thoughts to
share with your project. The first is to try to remember being
your child's age. When you were 13, for example, how did you feel
about...whatever the issue is? That perspective saved me a lot of
frustration with my daughters when they were teens. It didn't always
change my point of view as a mother but it
did help me to understand my daughters' feelings.
The second is related to step parenting. Oh, it is a daily
challenge for us dealing with bio-mom, who is residential parent, and
her desire to be in control. My tip is to wait things out.
Let the small things go and focus on the future. The goal
of parenting is to raise our kids up to become independent, successful
(relative term) adults and to foster healthy parental relationships.
So, save the battles for things that are really important to the
big picture.
