Annual Daycare Bill for Google Folks: $57,000

Posted on 08. Jul, 2008 by Brian in General

This is one of those items that would get On Balance treatment if On Balance was still around: the New York Times reported that Google has revamped its daycare, which has boosted the annual cost for a family of four from a jaw-dropping $33,000 to an almost-defies-belief $57,000.

I know I pooh-pooh those surveys that claim an at-home parent is “worth” huge amounts of money, but this suggests that if you’re in the Bay Area and staying at home, you’re worth waaaaay more than I would have expected.

I read that article the other day. Pretty frickin’ amazing. Love the founders quote about his employees feeling entitled to free M&Ms, though.

So much for Google’s silver lining. I can’t believe they actually charge several hundred dollars just to stay on the waiting list!

Well I guess it does solve their waiting list problem…

All good things come to an end.

Job market for software is real good though, so I guess this is another data point for google employees to decide if they are staying with the company.

That’s insane. But it’s what you get when you base corporate policy on the whims of one alpha mom.

Brian, you and I must be psychically linked. I blogged about this too: http://workingmoms.about.com/b/2008/07/07/memo-to-google-dont-mess-with-workers-child-care.htm

What amazed me in the NYT story is that Google apparently has TWO company sponsored child care centers. Why can’t I get just one? A small one — it could fit in the conference room!

That must be some pretty fancy daycare for those prices. I’m assuming that Google is just trying to get rid of the daycare by making the price unreasonable.

I’d be willing to watch 2 kids in my house for $2000/month. Get a few families on board and I could go full time and actually let the kids do arts and crafts and neat stuff like that.

well I guess I feel better about my decision to be a stay at home mum BUT that money upfront every year would be nice!!! It’s hard being a family of four on a single income.
